PRP Injections in San Diego: Everything You Need to Know
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections have become a trusted option for those seeking non-surgical solutions to issues like chronic pain, hair thinning, and skin aging. If you’re searching for a natural way to restore your skin, hair, or joint health, PRP injections might be the solution you’ve been waiting for. At Sports MedSpa, we’re proud to be San Diego’s number one clinic for PRP treatments, offering advanced regenerative solutions tailored to your needs.
In this article, we’ll answer the most frequently asked questions about PRP and help you understand why it’s become one of the most popular treatments in both aesthetics and sports medicine.
What Are PRP Injections and How Do They Work?
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, a powerful treatment that uses patient’s own blood to stimulate healing. During the procedure, we draw a small amount of patient’s blood and place it in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other components. At Sports MedSpa, we use a dual-spin centrifuge for all PRP joint injections for maximum platelet concentration. This golden-colored plasma is packed with growth factors that, when injected into targeted areas, help regenerate tissue, improve collagen production, and reduce inflammation. The best part? It’s completely natural and uses your body’s own ability to heal.
What Can PRP Injections Treat?
At Sports MedSpa in San Diego, PRP is used to treat a wide range of concerns, both cosmetic and medical. In other words, Sports MedSpa is a one-stop shop for both athletic and aesthetic concerns.
PRP in Sports Medicine
Athletes and active individuals turn to PRP to treat joint pain, tendon injuries, and chronic inflammation. Especially in areas like the knees, shoulders, and elbows PRP injections enhance collagen production and circulation naturally. For instance, PRP can effectively treat injuries such as golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, ligament sprains, labral tears, chronic joint pain, and SI joint dysfunction.
PRP in Aesthetics
PRP harnesses the body’s natural healing ability, making it a versatile treatment for a variety of concerns. One of the most popular applications is the PRP Facial, commonly referred to as the “vampire facial.” During this treatment, a microneedling device like SkinPen is used to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This allows the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to be deeply absorbed. This process stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture, elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines.
At Sports MedSpa, we offer both the SkinPen PRP Facial and PRP Face Injections. With the injectable approach, Dr. William Stendardi, MD delivers PRP directly into targeted areas of the face, allowing the plasma to reach deeper layers of the skin for enhanced rejuvenation and more dramatic results.
PRP for Hair and Hands
Hair Loss
Thinning hair is a common concern. PRP injections are applied to the scalp to activate dormant hair follicles. Over time, this encourages fuller, healthier hair growth.
Hand Rejuvenation
Similarly, PRP can be injected into the hands to restore volume, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of veins and wrinkles. As we age, the hands often reveal signs of aging sooner than other areas, and PRP offers a natural, regenerative solution that rejuvenates the skin from within.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PRP
Is PRP Safe?
Yes, experts consider PRP very safe. Because it’s derived from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or complications is extremely low. Most importantly, the procedure is minimally invasive and has been widely adopted by dermatologists, orthopedic specialists, and plastic surgeons around the world. At Sports MedSpa, all PRP treatments are performed or overseen by experienced medical professionals, ensuring both your safety and the highest standard of care.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
While everyone’s body responds differently, most patients begin to see noticeable improvements within 3 to 4 weeks. However, the full results typically develop over a few months. As your body continues to regenerate and repair the targeted tissues, you will see improvement over time. Whether you’re getting PRP for skin rejuvenation, hair growth, or joint relief, patience pays off. PRP offers a gradual but lasting transformation.
How Many Sessions Are Needed for PRP Injections?
The number of PRP sessions needed depends on the treatment area and your individual goals. For instance, if you’re receiving a PRP Facial or PRP for Hair Restoration, we typically recommend a series of three treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results. On the other hand, if you’re getting a PRP Joint Injection, you may not need to return for 6 to 12 months. In fact, if you’re satisfied with the results and your pain is completely resolved, you may not need another session at all. Most of our joint injection patients experience significant relief and don’t require a follow-up for the entire year.
At Sports MedSpa, we offer a consultation with Dr. William Stendardi, MD to help determine if PRP is right for you. While there is a consultation fee, that fee applies toward your treatment if you choose to proceed. During your visit, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan to ensure you achieve the best possible outcome.
Does It Hurt?
Joint injections can cause discomfort. We don’t use numbing agents for the procedure, however, we do everything to make you feel comfortable.
For aesthetic procedures, while you may experience some discomfort during the injections, most patients tolerate the treatment well. We apply a topical numbing agent or use localized anesthetic when needed to make the procedure more comfortable. After the session, you may feel mild soreness or pressure in the treated area, but this typically fades within 24–48 hours.
Are There Any Side Effects or Downtime?
One of the major benefits of PRP is that there’s very little downtime. You may experience some redness, swelling, or slight bruising at the injection site. However, these symptoms are usually mild and temporary. Most patients can resume their normal activities the same day or the next. We do not recommend heavy workout the first two weeks. Our providers will give you detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and the best results.
How Long Do Results Last for PRP Joint Injection?
PRP results are long-lasting, but not permanent. Depending on the area treated, results can last anywhere from 6 months to over a year. Many patients choose to have annual touch-ups to maintain their improvements. Lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, stress, and skincare can also influence the longevity of your results.
What Should I Do Before and After My PRP Treatment?
To prepare for your PRP treatment:
Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol or anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen for a few days before and after the procedure. These medications can interfere with the body’s natural healing response. After treatment, avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours, skip direct sun exposure, and follow your provider’s instructions carefully. Good preparation and aftercare are key to maximizing the effectiveness of PRP.
